What are the characteristics of SFBT (Solution-focused Brief Therapy)?
Solution-focused Brief Therapy was created by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg in the USA, during the 1970s. An important source of inspiration for its creators was the work of Milton Erickson, who developed the concept of resources, as the main source of human strength and agency. Erickson also believed that Clients already know the solutions to their problems, they just don’t know about it yet. Within SFBT, we consider the future to be something we can shape and ifluence by making the best possible choices in the present.
What are the core ideas of SFBT
- Small steps can lead to big and impactful changes.
- Implementing changes in a Client’s life is possible by tapping into their resources: talents, skills, experiences.
- Effective therapy in SFBT is defined according to the client’s needs and outlining a path which leads to their satisfaction.
- Solutions are not always responding to the problem – first we must see the needs behind that problem
- Everyone is an expert when it comes to their own life
- Short-term therapy means “as fast as it is possible for the client”
In our job we apply the core philosophy of SFBT:
If something works, do more of it.
If it is not working, do something different
If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it
SFBT is excellent in individual therapy for children, adolescents, adults or psychotherapy for couples or families.
About the founders of ICTK
Internet Center for Short-Term Therapy was created by psychologists: Katarzyna Podleska and Katarzyna Szałek-Zielińska. They connected over a shared desire to provide timely psychological support, using the latest tools while keeping the process simple for the Client.
Katarzyna Podleska holds a Master’s degree in psychology, is a certified SFBT (Solution-Focused Brief Therapy) therapist, a qualified psychotraumatologist, as well as a diagnostician and an internationally experienced trainer. She has significantly contributed to the field of psychology, including developing her own workshops in crisis intervention, psychological first aid, communication, stress management, and prevention of professional and parental burnout. She authored a guide for individuals hosting refugees, frequently cited and discussed in the media (TVN, TVN24, Radio Dla Ciebie, Gazeta Prawna). In 2016 and 2017 she conducted training for dozens of psychologists and psychiatrists in Ukraine, on helping patients dealing with trauma and psychological first aid in Kharkov, where she worked with individuals who have been displaced from their homes. Since then, she has continued to conduct training and supervision for psychologists.
Her life motto is – nothing happens without a reason.
Katarzyna Szałek-Zielińska holds a Master’s degree in Psychology, is a certified PSTTSR consultant, a therapist in the process of PSTTSR certification and a member of the Polish Psychology Society as well as the Polish Therapist Association for Solution-focused Brief Therapy. She began her career working in HR for huge corporations such as Unilever, CEDC or Carlsberg. Despite being dedicated to pursuing psychotherapy in her professional life for only a few years, she has already managed to establish the Ursynów Center for Short-term Therapy, which is the first accredited SFBT center in Poland.
Her favorite quote are the words of lice Miller – No path in my life has been as long as the one that was meant to lead me to myself.
